How to Trick Yourself into Becoming a Morning Person

Self Heal.

How to Trick Yourself into Becoming a Morning Person
Stephanie Vozza

The early bird apparently does get the worm. Christoph Randler,
a biology professor at the University of Education in Heidelberg, Germany,
found that morning people are often more successful than evening people because,
as a group, they tend to be proactive. A recent survey conducted by The Guardian
confirms this idea, reporting that many CEOs of successful companies are up by 5 a.m.
But what if you’re more of a night owl than a morning lark – is it possible to change your ways?
Yes, but it will take work, says Dr. W. Christopher Winter,
Medical Director for the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Charlottesville, Va. and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
"Your genes determine what we call your 'chronotype,' which is if you are a morning
or evening person," says Winter. "It's often similar within families,
but it can be influenced to a certain degree."
Changing your chronotype takes about two weeks, but you have to stick with it.
If you slack off, you’ll drift back to your natural tendencies,
Winter cautions. He offers six simple tips for adjusting your internal clock:

1. Put yourself on a morning schedule, but don't sweat bed time.
Wake up, exercise and eat at the same time every day, says Winter.
The body likes to anticipate what’s happening, and will settle into a routine.
But don’t worry about your bedtime: "People get hung up on setting a bedtime,
but that’s a mistake because it can cause stress," he says. "The bedtime will sort itself out
because you'll be tired. The most important piece is to not slack off on the wakeup time."
Winter says the problem occurs when you drift back to older patterns during weekends
and vacations. Sleeping in on weekends tells your body that your early morning routine
is just an arbitrary schedule and that it should stick to its chronotype. To become a morning person, it’s important to get up early on weekends, even if you are out late the night before.

2. Use a smart alarm.
The snooze button was designed to allow people to go back to sleep for a few minutes without reentering a deep sleep cycle, but it can hinder your transformation into an early riser, says Winter.
“There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with it, but if you want to wake up at a certain time
you’re not in a cognitive state of mind to make a decision about whether or not
to add nine more minutes of sleep,” he says.
Instead, Winter likes to use a smartphone alarm app, such as Smart Alarm or Math Alarm,
that requires him to solve a math problem to turn it off or set it to snooze.
“Solving a problem makes your brain awake enough to make an informed decision,” he says.
He also likes to use his music library to play a random song as an alarm.
“You can become callous to the same song or sound on your alarm,” he says.
“Different songs will be a novel stimulus and that can be helpful.”

3. Let in the light.
Whether it’s natural or artificial, light is significant because it tells the brain that the day has begun and sends signals to the body to stop making melatonin,
the hormone that helps regular sleep, says Winter.
“If it’s dark when you want to wake up – say 5 a.m., for example –
you can fool your brain into thinking the sun is up by using bright indoor lights,” he says.

4. Get some exercise.
Winter says exercising first thing in the morning helps wake up the body.

Researchers at Appalachian State University found that morning exercise
lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety, and helps you sleep better at night.
Winter says exercising in bright light is best.
He suggests going for a morning bike ride or jog, or taking the dog for a walk.

5. Have a protein-heavy meal.
Skip the bagel and go for eggs or yogurt, says Winter.
Protein facilitates wakefulness, he says, while carbohydrates promote sleep.
"Protein increases your dopamine levels, which help make you ready for the day.”

6. Avoid the urge to nap.
Winter says falling asleep earlier may be difficult in the first few days,
and you may have a strong urge to nap, but you should fight it.
"Capitalize on sleepiness as a way to go to bed earlier," he says.

"If you nap, you'll destroy your natural stimulus for sleep."

What is SEO and how does it work

Vetch and (brown) sorrel.

What is SEO and how does it work
jaz

In terms of what SEO is and how it works this SEO article is going tackle all the important information you might need to know about Search Engine Optimization. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and this is a technique which helps search engines find and rank your site higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search query, hence SEO helps you get traffic from search engines. Every time you enter a query in a search engine you get a list of web results that contain that query term.
Users usually run to visit websites that are at the top of this list as they perceive those to be more applicable to the query. Maybe you have ever wondered why some of these websites rank better than the others, well the reason is because of a powerful web marketing technique
called SEO.
A successful search engine optimization campaign will have, as part of the improvements, carefully select, relevant, keywords which the on-page optimization will be designed
to make prominent for search engine algorithms.

To learn about SEO the basic truth everyone needs to know is that search engines are not humans. The differences between how humans and search engines view web pages is that search engines are text driven unlike humans and might be obvious for everybody. Search engines are far from intelligent creatures that can feel the beauty of a cool design or enjoy the sounds and movement in movies despite the fact that technology advances rapidly.
Looking at particular site items (mainly text) to get an idea what a site is about search engines crawl the Web. as we will see next, search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results – crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, and retrieving and because of this, that brief explanation might not be the most precise one.
In order to see what is there search engines crawl the Web and this task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler or a spider. In the case of Google they call it Gogglebot. Spiders follow links from one page to another on their way they index everything they find. On the web there might be over twenty billion pages and because of this big figure it is impossible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page has been modified. It is even possible that sometimes crawlers may not end up visiting your site for a month or even two.
The thing you can do is to check what a crawler sees from your site. Crawlers are not humans and they do not see images, Flash movies, JavaScript, frames, password-protected pages and directories as we have said earlier. If you have tons of these on your site you have to see if these goodies are viewable by the spider by running the spider simulator. A spider simulator is an online tool to get an idea about how search engine see your website content. They will not be spidered, not indexed, not processed etc. if they are not viewable.
The next step is to index the page’s content after it has been crawled. After the page has been index it is stored in a giant database where it can be retrieved later. Identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keyword is essentially the process of indexing. Search engine will deal just fine with the task of processing such amounts of information since it won’t be possible for a human to do that.

Taxman's incredible technology tracks down tax dodgers

Horehound.

Taxman's incredible technology tracks down tax dodgers
HMRC’s computers know far more about you than you’d expect

The taxman has spent the last seven years developing a computer programme called 'Connect', which has an extraordinary ability to spot tax dodgers. The system trawls databases of personal finance information, spots connections between people and businesses, and looks for mismatches with the information that taxpayers have given in their tax returns. The incredibly complex system has cost a reported £80 million so far, but since 2008 it has clawed back £3 billion extra in tax.

The computer program was revealed by accountants BDO in a new report. It said the programme searches 30 sources repeatedly to capture new information, check records against one another, and highlight potential areas for investigation. These sources range from public sector records like the DVLA to private businesses.

What does it know?

It means, for example, it can compare your bank account balance - and the money going in - with information from your tax return - or PAYE data submitted by your employer. It can also compare the amount you claim to have paid into your pension - and therefore declared tax relief on - with the amount actually paid into your pension. In addition, it can spot income from savings, and compare it to the savings income you declared on your tax return.
Tax tips and guides

Clever data collection tools can also keep an eye on online auctions and marketplaces, to check whether you have an unusual amount of activity on the sites that could hint at undeclared income. It can also access records of things like the car you are driving, so it can ask questions of people who declare low levels of income and drive expensive luxury cars.

The idea is that if any of these things don't match up, HMRC can identify you as a target for further investigation. Already Connect is responsible for highlighting the vast majority of cases for investigation.

The report added that the programme is getting increasingly powerful, which means it can search further and faster. From September next year HMRC has access to files held by banks and financial firms in British overseas territories, and in 2017 it will get access to another 60 countries - which will all be included in searches by Connect.

Should you be worried?

Of course, powerful technology like this raises concerns that inaccuracies in underlying records could trigger tax investigations on completely innocent people. Then there are the security issues that always come with processing this level of data. There will be some people who despite having a completely clean tax record, still don't like the idea of their financial dealings being searched.

However, in an age where the government is squeezing every possible penny out of honest taxpayers, it's good to see government agencies are also working on solutions that will squeeze every penny out of those trying to cheat the tax system too. As a spokesperson told AOL: "Connect is an important tool in ensuring we maximise revenue. It brings together over a billion pieces of data which our analysts use to identify those who are determined to line their own pockets by cheating the UK of vital tax revenue."

But what do you think? Are you happy for the system to check your records, in order to track down tax dodgers, or does it leave you feeling a bit unsettled? Let us know in the comments.

What to Do When You Need Inspiration But It Just Won’t Come

Bad hair day.

What to Do When You Need Inspiration But It Just Won’t Come
Eric Ravenscraft

You’ve been staring at a blank page for hours. No matter how hard you think,
you just can’t make the brilliant ideas appear. It’s time to give up, and that’s okay.
As business site Entrepreneur explains, inspiration doesn’t work on a schedule (and there’s plenty of science to back that idea up). Your brain can’t be forced to come up with a stellar idea.
Trying to coerce your mind into trying, however, can hold you back.
If you want to encourage the good ideas, get comfortable with giving up:
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at a blank screen, a white sheet of paper
or a media board and racked my brain for a big idea that just wouldn’t come.
Finally, I give up, plop down in a chair and say, “Screw it, I’m done.’’ It takes a while for my mind
to shut off, but when it does, that’s inevitably when the answer comes.
Any good creative knows that ideas can come at the least opportune times.
The trick is getting into the habit of allowing them to happen naturally. Sometimes that means
you just stop working for the day, give up on being “productive” and let your mind wander. Adhering to a rigid set of rules doesn’t always guarantee brilliance. Let yourself have space
to give up for a while and you may find your ideas come more naturally in a relaxed state.
Don’t forget to have a way to write them down when they happen, too.

4 Ways to Manage Remote Employees

Woodbridge UK

4 Ways to Manage Remote Employees
Christian Lanng

In the past few years the number of employees working remotely has increased significantly, according to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report.  Whether these employees are working
from home, shared work spaces or coffee shops, research shows that remote workers
are often more productive than their office-dwelling counterparts,
their job satisfaction is higher and they are less likely to quit.
(Plus, it can help companies save a lot of money on in-office costs.)
I couldn't agree more. As the co-founder and CEO of Tradeshift -- a global-business platform connecting enterprises with their suppliers -- I find that the benefits of allowing employees
to work remotely go beyond increased production and decreased office costs.
Employees given the option to work remotely tend to be more loyal. In my experience,
people thrive when they know that their employer trusts them and they tend to rise to the level
of responsibility and self-motivation required from a remote worker.
Executives and managers, though, are presented with a unique set of challenges
when dealing with remote employees, whether they are remote full time or part time.
For example, employers may feel uncomfortable not being able to watch or keep track of
remote employees throughout the day. They may also fear that communication
will be more difficult if employees are not physically in the same office.
Of course, each business is different and there is no one-size-fits-all way
to manage remote employees. However, here are a few things that managers can do
to have success with remote workers:

1. Implement a formal policy. To make sure that everyone is on the same page,
work with your HR department to create a policy for remote workers. Include specifics
such as when employees can work remotely, the types of tasks that can be completed remotely and the expectations regarding how reachable by phone or email a remote employee should be.
Setting up clear expectations is key to avoiding miscommunication and abuse of policy.

2. Set up instant-messaging systems. Allow employees to communicate with each other
from wherever they may be working by investing in a corporate instant-messaging system.
This way employees can ask quick questions and send simple reminders instantly
without having to send emails. This slightly more productive communication tool
will help ensure that constant communication is as possible remotely as it is in the office.
Some platforms businesses have used include HipChat, Campfire and Chatter.

3. Enable video communication. For status meetings or conference calls, encourage remote employees to communicate over video. There are some great video calling services available, including free Skype and Google+, which cost nothing.
The real benefits here are nonverbal communication cues which can lead
to less miscommunications and better relationship building between colleagues.
Talking on a video chat also decreases multitasking since both parties involved can see the other. This often helps with keeping employees on track and focused.

4. Leverage cloud technologies. One of the most important factors in how successful
remote employees can be is whether or not they have the right technology. Ideally, employees should be able to access any files or data that they can access in the office while working remotely. This may require a number of different networks and servers depending on the size
of your company, but one good practice is to invest in quality cloud technologies. If your company uses secure, cloud-based software for everything from customer relations to invoicing,
employees will be able to easily access whatever they need from wherever they may be working.
While I certainly don’t think that working remotely is the right choice for every employee
or every business, it is definitely worth considering for the right people at the right times.
If implemented correctly, a remote working policy can lead to happier,
more productive employees, decreased office costs and an overall healthier company.
