The art of getting "googled"

The art of getting "googled"
Mark Courtney

If I “googled” you right now would I find you?
Your first reaction might be “Yes! Of course!” but how much time have you spent googling yourself, in the same way a prospect might search for your real estate services?
And can you be sure that the way you THINK your customers search for your company
IS the same as what they ACTUALLY type into a search bar?
Is it even important? Back in the old days, a few glossy magazine ads,
teamed with newspaper listings and leaving a stack of business cards here and there
was the best way to grow your real estate business... I’m afraid to say those days are long gone!
In fact more than 80% of real estate transactions begin online.
Therefore if there’s one way of being found you need to worry about it’s the internet,
because when someone decides it’s time to buy a house,
the likelihood is it’s the first place they’ll go.
And of course, when it comes to finding something or someone via the internet
the natural reaction for most of us is to ask Google.
In fact “Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second on average,
which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day
and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.”
Everything is just a click away now and if your real estate business
doesn’t have the same exposure and presence on the Internet as other competing realtors
you might as well wave goodbye to your share of that 80%!

Bottom line?
Marketing your real estate business online is no longer an option, it’s a necessity to survive!
With that said, here are some ways to boost your online exposure
and increase your chances of being found in Google searches:

Keep it clean
Start with a visually pleasing and functional website
ensuring everything makes sense and uses good clean code.
This includes clear titles, headings and text to enable the searcher (and search engines)
to easily figure out what your site is about. Also think about making sure your website
is easy to navigate taking into consideration mobile as well as desktop users.

Build value, not links
Search engines are also looking to establish your trustworthiness and authority
and one way they do so is looking at what other websites link in to your site.
It’s important at this stage to note that Google is always changing, and therefore
you need to keep up with the ways Google does this; for example it used to be about
getting as many links to your site as possible, whereas now it’s far more focused on quality
as opposed to quantity. Focus on only obtaining good quality,
relevant links from authoritative sites and don’t rush this isn’t something that happens overnight
it’s about building and nurturing relationships and therefore needs contribution over time.

Wording is key
When it comes to keywords, as I mentioned at the beginning of the article
you need to work out what your market is typing into Google.
Having the right keywords on your website is often misconstrued
for having as many of the same word plastered across an entire site.
The fact is, search engines, like people don’t like or respond well to spammy text.
Therefore the best way to incorporate key words on your website is to have one page
dedicated to what you do, with the right business focus that aims to answer the questions
your prospects might have. It also helps to gather insights into what search terms
your prospects are using so that you can make sure you incorporate those words into said page.

Sitemaps are essential
Sitemaps work as navigation tools; they list all of your key pages
and tell search engines where they each are within the site.
Having a detailed site-map (especially if your site carries a lot of content)
can help towards improving your website’s ranking on search engines.

Metrics matter
Analytics give you a baseline to measure performance
and focus your business improvement efforts.
Google webmaster tools, as well as Google Analytics, can give you incredibly valuable insights
into where the most valuable traffic is coming from, as well as informing you
on how people and search engines move around your site,
which is great for being able to analyse what is and what isn’t working.

Consider DIY SEO
Doing your own SEO is a great idea because the likelihood is that nobody will know
your real estate business like you do! Depending on your level of expertise you may require
a little training or assistance, but in-house SEO is certainly a bonus for businesses.

A Final Word
Internet marketing is here and it’s here to stay! And there is no better time to make
a name for yourself and your business online than right now.
Well, yesterday or last year was actually a better time. You get my point though.
Whether you learn everything about online marketing for Real Estate on blogs and forums
and do it yourself or you hire a professional to manage things for you, it doesn’t matter.
All that matters is that people out there looking to buy or sell their home can find you
on the Internet. And preferably on the first page of Google.

Stop Worrying: 7 Effective Strategies for Dealing With Anxiety

Tesal was used in the woollen industry.

Stop Worrying: 7 Effective Strategies for Dealing With Anxiety
 Tejvan Pettinger

We all spend too much time worrying about things that will never materialize.
And this worry only makes our lives unnecessarily complicated and painful.
However there is hope.
By implementing the strategies in this article, each of us can diminish our worries and anxieties,
and thereby be free to enjoy life to its full potential.

Delay Worrying
This is a simple technique to stop our worries. If you find yourself concerned over a situation
in the future, you can try telling yourself, “let me worry about this tomorrow;
there is no need to worry about it today because it won’t happen for quite a while anyway”. Whenever the problem comes to your mind, just try this technique – delay worrying
for another day. The fact is that most worries never occur; delaying them is just a clever way
of dealing with our negative mind. The nature of our mind is to create problems
and things to worry about, but this is a way to forget about them.
If you keep ignoring your worries you may later realize they are not going to occur anyway.

Take Action
When we worry about things we can become paralysed by fear. Rather than just worrying,
think very carefully about what practical steps you can take to avoid the problem.
For example, if you worry about your finances consider how you could reduce your spending, increase your income and consolidate your debt.
If you just worry and feel powerless the problem will not go away,
but will continue to lurk in the back of your mind.
By taking action and working towards a resolution you will feel much better.
Some problems shouldn’t be ignored, they require action; however,
for other worries there are no steps that you can take because the worry is mostly imaginary.
If you realize there is nothing you can actually do,
this is a very good reason to stop worrying about it.

Be Careful What You Wish For
When we think about something intensely we give this idea greater power.
In some form these ideas are more likely to materialize. If we worry over making a mistake,
we can increase our chances of doing this. We therefore need to be careful what we think about;
if we worry over a negative outcome we increase the chance that it will occur –
Our worries can become self fulfilling. If we remember the power of thought,
we will be more careful about dwelling on painful outcomes.
Rather than worrying about a negative event, focus your attention on how difficult situations
could be resolved and think how you would successfully deal with the problem.

Keep Things in Perspective
Try writing a list of all the things that you are currently worried about, then examine how much
they really affect your life. Are you worrying about important things in life or merely side issues?
If your worries are insignificant issues then give them the importance they deserve.-
If you don’t get a certain parking space in the morning it is not the end of the world.
If a child forgets to turn a light out, it is not a big deal.
Don’t be overwhelmed by small things – try to see the bigger picture.

Control Your Thoughts
The key to reducing anxiety and worry is learning the ability to control your thoughts.
Sometimes we feel powerless over our own thoughts; it is as if we are slave to them.
Whatever thoughts may come we identify with them and accept them as true.
However, this is a big mistake. Our own thoughts are often wrong. Also we do have the ability
to decide which thoughts to pursue and which thoughts to reject; if we are determined
we can prevent thoughts taking hold and throw them out of our mind. If we give importance
to controlling our own mind we will be less subject to pursuing endless worries and anxieties.

Don’t Be Vain
It might be harsh, but alas true, that we often worry about what people think of us.
We worry endlessly that we might not meet society’s expectations; we worry about
whether people will like us. With this mental outlook we start to give too much importance
to our ego; it means we are constantly looking for appreciation and the admiration of others.
If we don’t get this appreciation, we start to worry that we are no good.
If we can develop greater self confidence and inner poise,
then we will not worry about what others believe or think.
We need to give less importance to the opinions of the world.
Even if we get criticized, we should not worry because we should not identify our self worth
with the opinions of others. This is not easy to do overnight, but, if we can detach ourselves
from judgements of others we will gain greater inner peace and avoid worrying over
the relatively insignificance of people’s judgements.

Analyze Them
Another approach to dealing with worries is to carefully analyze whether they are actually justified. Ask yourself why am I worrying about this? Could I be wrong?
Suppose you are worrying about someone’s reaction to what you did at work;
it is likely that you are imagining the worse and assigning false motives to the other person.
If nothing else you can sow a seed of doubt in the reason for your anxiety.
Before, you felt it was 100% certain to occur, but, on reflection
you have to admit it is perhaps only 50% true. By analyzing and stepping back from the problem
you can evaluate its importance and this is an effective way to diminish the power of our worries.

There are always things to worry about, but, as it has often been said,
worrying is not going to help.
Either take practical steps to deal with the problem or don’t waste your time worrying
about unnecessary things. If you keep ignoring worries, eventually they will go away.
The key is to live in the present moment; when we worry we are thinking of the future or past
and this prevents us from enjoying the present moment.
To reduce worries and anxieties is not to ignore problems –
it means we work toward solutions rather than just thinking of bad outcomes.

The language of lying

Snow in a sollen aka as a snow berry bush.

The language of lying
Noah Zandan

We hear anywhere from 10 to 200 lies a day.
And although we’ve spent much of our history coming up with ways to detect these lies
by tracking physiological changes in their tellers, these methods have proved unreliable.
Is there a more direct approach? Noah Zandan uses some famous examples
of lying to illustrate how we might use communications science to analyze the lies themselves.

The Secret to Being Happy at Work and Home

Snowdrops in Skipton. UK

The Secret to Being Happy at Work and Home
Keith Rosen

Stressing over results is ruining your life. Do this instead.
A Flawed Model for Success and Happiness
“Once I make my quota, hit my number, close that sale,
get that promotion, help that customer, have more money, solve that problem,
THEN I’ll be really happy, satisfied and will finally feel successful!”

Here’s a teaspoon of reality for you. For how long?
Imagine, for a moment, it’s the end of the quarter. You hit your sales quota.
Congratulations! High-five! Let’s celebrate!
And then what happens?
The counter resets back to zero. It’s time to begin another quarter and do it all over again!
This is a flawed model of thinking, since you’re allowing external situations and outcomes
to dictate your internal condition, happiness, confidence and peace of mind.

The solution?
Shift your thinking from focusing on what’s next to what’s NOW.
Besides, what’s the real secret of life? Enjoying the passage of time.
Hafez, a Persian poet, said it best, “I am happy before I have a reason.”
Be realistic here. Your goals aren’t going anywhere! They’re set.
So, why do you feel the need to continually obsess over the results,
let it dominate every conversation and annoy your direct reports about their goals?
Because there is some limiting and toxic belief people harbor deep inside that tells us,
“Focus on the results and the results will happen faster.” Yeah, right.
Why obsess over the results when it’s going to be what you do in the moment
and how you do it that will ultimately produce your desired outcome!

Take the Result-Driven Challenge
Would it make you feel better if we validated this right now?
Let’s test out this theory that plagues managers all over the world.
Okay, here’s what you’ll need to do. Think about your goals, commitments, business objectives
or sales targets. Can you envision them? Are they clear in your mind? Okay.
Now, for the next thirty seconds, that’s all I want you to think about.
Imagine all of your goals in your mind’s eye and focus on nothing else. Ready? Go!
(Thirty seconds later.)
So, what happened? Did the result manifest any faster?
Are you now any closer to achieving your goals?
I don’t think so. My point is, focusing on the result contributes nothing towards
achieving that very result you seek. Paradoxically, focusing on the result
becomes the very detriment to achieving your goals, since you are no longer focused
on the process, the how, the quality of output and ultimately – your people.
Of course, it is absolutely essential to plan for your future, set goals and have a clear vision
for yourself, your team and for your organization. However, this needs to be balanced
with being in the moment and choosing to live; and act with purpose.

Engagement Starts at Home
If you are a leader, it doesn’t stop or start at work or at home. It’s who you are.
That’s probably why I’m so overly conscientious
about what I’m modeling for my children every day.
As the proud father of three honor roll students, the topic of homework, what they learn at school and its relevance to the “real world” has a tendency to surface every once in a while.
“Dad, explain to me how this homework is even relevant to what I’ll be doing in the future when
I get a job or start my own business? I mean, when will I ever need to use this in the real world?”
My response is simply this. “If it’s part of your curriculum and what you need to do and learn
to get the grades you want and make you a more well-rounded, educated person,
then it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. It doesn’t matter how seemingly insignificant it is
or how many times you’ve done that task. Regardless of what it is, if you are going to put forth
your personal effort, then focus 100% of your energy and effort on what you’re doing
in that moment because what you’re doing in the moment is the most important thing at that time.
Whether it’s a task, project, hobby, sport, practice, homework or even a conversation,
put your head into it and more important, put your heart into it.
Whatever it is you are doing at that moment,
do it the very best you can because what you do is a reflection of you and who you are.”

Refocus Now! Everything Counts
The habits and choices you made yesterday
are what created the life and career you have today.
So, here’s the real opportunity.
The habits and choices you make today will create the life and career you will have tomorrow.
Think about the things that consume your day. Emails, phone calls, travel, customer meetings, reports, presentations, training, coaching, working with customers, business development,
internal meetings, up-selling, handling challenges and problems, admin work, project management, team meetings, cross-selling, forecast reviews, deal reviews, performance reviews,
getting to decision makers, weekly reporting, asking for referrals,
your own professional development; I can go on and on.
Here’s the point. Are we embracing the same philosophy we tell your children?
What about the message you deliver to your team? Are you modeling this yourself?
“If you are going to put forth your personal effort, then focus 100% of your energy and effort
on what you’re doing in that moment. Put your head into it and more important,
put your heart into it. Whatever it is you’re doing at that moment,
do it the very best you can because what you do is a reflection of you and who you are.”

Miracles Happen When You Pay Attention
It’s so easy to go through the motions without the e-motion. To treat exceptional results
as just another day at the office. To ignore the seemingly insignificant miracles that happen
amongst your team and with your customers. The remarkable things you do
and what your people do every day. How they have changed, improved or grown.
Do you even recognize when these things occur? And if you do, are you acknowledging them?
There is a greater cost incurred when having both eyes focused on the result.
If you continually focus on and live in the future, at some point, you are going to turn around
and realize your life has passed you by. Life is what happens in the now, in the present moment.
And if this isn’t enough to ignite the fire of change, then ask yourself,
“What am I modeling for the people around me, at work, at home, for my children?”

Re-Engage
Ultimately, whatever you’re doing in the moment, regardless of what it is;
it is the most important thing you are doing at that time.
Aside from the result, let the activity and how engaged you are in the activity be the reward
so that you can authentically enjoy the process and not just the fleeting win.
As a leader, if you can model this, think about the message you are sending to the rest of your team and the impact it will have on each person as well as on the culture you want to create.
Imagine an overall deeper, more authentic level of engagement with your team, your customers
and ultimately, the impact on your performance and the value you deliver.
Respect the dualities of life; two conflicting truths that co-exist simultaneously.
That is, be mindful of the future, while being engaged in the moment.

Simply put, be where you stand.

5 Mind Tricks To Help Keep More Money In Your Pockets

Moss and other plants on a wall.

5 Mind Tricks To Help Keep More Money In Your Pockets
Matt Duczeminski

Money, it’s a gas. Or, at least, it runs out as fast as gas does.
If you’re living paycheck to paycheck,
it can be incredibly hard to start up the nest egg you’ve been planning for years.
But it’s not impossible. With a few tweaks to your daily spending habits,
you’ll find you have more than just spare change in your pockets by Friday evening.
If you want to save money, read on.

1. Think of hourly worth
When I was a young adult working at a summer camp, I was always amazed when
most of my co-workers would come in with a fresh deli-made bagel, bottle of orange juice,
and cup of coffee every morning. We only made around $10 an hour,
so those that made this a daily habit had already spent the money
they would make in their first hour of every workday before they even got to work.
If you want to save money, quit the impulse purchases. Every time you want to buy something,
think to yourself “How much time would I need to work to pay for this?”
If the amount of time absolutely appalls you, put the item back on the shelf and move on.

2. Savor things and experiences
If you add up your daily $3 Starbucks coffee habit over the course of a year,
you might be shocked to realize you’re spending anywhere from $700 to $1000 yearly on a drink that lasts you twenty minutes. Your first impulse would be to stop buying the coffee altogether.
But what’s the point of living if you can’t enjoy yourself every once in a while?
Instead of making it a habit, cut down to once or twice a week. Save your “coffee day”
for the rough mornings, rather than getting it all the time because it’s what you normally do.
You’ll end up enjoying every sip you take just that much more,
knowing you won’t be allowing yourself to have another one until the following week.

3. Think of time off as lost money
If your boss offers overtime, take it
Chances are you just wanted to go home and relax on the couch for the evening anyway.
If you make $15 an hour and get double-time for working longer hours,
and your boss offers you two extra hours of work, is it really worth losing $60 to catch the Seinfeld reruns you’ve seen a hundred times? You might not have technically lost any money,
but you lost potential money. It’s one thing to have missed opportunities in the past,
but to disregard future opportunities that you still have the chance to take advantage
of is a complete waste.

4. Spend where it matters
Money is essentially meaningless until you give it meaning.
If you have a million dollars in the bank but refuse to touch it, it’s just a number on the computer.
But if you have $100 in your pocket and spend it on a romantic dinner with your wife,
you’ve spent $100 not just on dinner,
but on making a memory that will last long after you finish dessert.
A dollar might not go as far as it used to, but since you are free to do with your money
as you please, make the most of every penny you earn.

5. Think of money saved as money earned
Going back to the idea of not spending habitually and splurging on unnecessary items,
change the way you think of money saved.
It’s one thing to say you “saved” $500 this year by not buying a donut every morning,
but you could also look at it as you “earned” $500 this year
by not buying a donut every morning. It might not seem like it, but didn’t it take effort to give up that sweet pick-me-up? You were working to give up the habit you had formed,
and for your troubles, you earned some extra money in your pocket.
Think of how much money smokers could earn if they gave up the disgusting habit!
Once you earn this money by giving up something fairly inconsequential,
you’ll be free to spend it on the things in your life that actually matter.
