How You Know You've Created the Company of Your Dreams

How You Know You've Created the Company of Your Dreams
Catherine Clifforf

You don’t become an entrepreneur because it’s easy or convenient.
You decide to start your own business because you want your life to be meaningful,
because you want to feel like your life has a purpose,
because you are trying to build something bigger than yourself.
What does that feel like? How does it feel to chase -- and achieve -- your dream?
How do you know that you are heading in the right direction?
Finding your purpose doesn’t always come with a parade and a champagne celebration.
Sometimes it appears as a quiet, simple moment. That’s how it was for Adrian Gradinaru,
co-founder of New York City-based boat rental marketplace Sailo.
The website allows people to search, compare and book boats online.

Earlier this summer, Gradinaru was heading home one night this summer,
walking through New York City after a long day at work, when he realized he truly was doing work that provided him a sense of purpose. “I felt this interior calm that was sort of amazing,”
says Gradinaru. “It’s not about money, it’s not about profit,
I feel like we are providing a service that people are actually using and they are enjoying it.”
For one of the other co-founders, that moment of clarity came in the form of a phone call.
“One of our customers called us, this was somebody we didn’t know,
and they just told us that they had had the best day [of] their life.
And we had created a company that provided the best day of people’s lives
and that’s ultimately why we started it,” says Delphine Braas, another co-founder of Sailo.
To learn more about Sailo, and hear the co-founders talk about how it feels to discover
a sense of purpose through your work, watch the video above.

What it's like to be a young person today.

What it's like to be a young person today.

They are the largest generation in the workplace, bringing change along with them.
Weaned on keypads and cyberspace, exhibiting a comfort level with technology
difficult for other generations to fathom.
Their social skills, their expectations and demands, and the perceived gulfs between “us and them” have pegged them as vastly different from all generations before them.
Their presence can shake out a sense of complacency and fundamental assumptions
that other workers –- and entire cultures – may carry.

Millennials are remarkably similar around the world.
They like their jobs and their organizations, and they largely want the same things:
an interesting, high-paying, stable job and working with people they like, trust,
and feel appreciated by, in organizations that are socially responsible
and value them enough to provide flexibility and opportunities for growth and promotion.
The good news is that Millennials can demonstrate high degrees of commitment
to the organizations that employ them. They can be strongly motivated to contribute
and actually like the organization they are working for. They can be committed to do what it takes
o help the organization succeed, if they are engaged the right way.

What Millennials Want from Work: How to Maximize Engagement in Today's Workforce Hardcover – January 1, 2016
Jennifer J. Deal and  Alec Levenson

The most comprehensive, in-depth look at Millennials to date―essential for managers,
HR professionals, and global business leaders seeking to align long-term organizational goals
with the realities of the new workforce
Millennials have been burdened with a reputation as spoiled, lazy, and entitled,
but the reality behind the stereotype is far richer and more complex.
Who are Millennials and what do they really want?
Based on fieldwork and survey data from global research on more than 25,000 Millennials
and 29,000 older workers in 22 countries, this book paints a comprehensive,
scientifically accurate picture of what really motivates Millennials around the world.
Learn how to get the most from Millennials by:
• Improving workplace flexibility―because Millennials don’t separate life and work
• Providing adequate support and feedback―because Millennials like to learn and grow
• Coaching, not micromanaging―because Millennials value autonomy
• Designing competitive salary structures―because Millennials know what’s up
• Providing opportunities to contribute to society―because Millennials care about doing good
Millennials want a satisfying job that pays well, coworkers they like and trust,
advancement opportunities, and the occasional pat on the back. Who doesn’t want those things?
This essential book explains who Millennials really are, and offers practical advice to help those
who manage, lead, and work with Millennials to improve teamwork, increase productivity, strengthen organizational culture, and build a robust talent pipeline.
